We’re buying more software than ever – billions of dollars of HR Technology spend every year. We have better technology to run our enterprises than ever before. It’s never been a more exciting time in the field of HR tech: innovation is ripe and rampant. Yet:
Few business leaders believe they are getting the outcomes or value they expected from that spend.
Something is missing. Before we ever consider deploying technology, we need to deploy MINDSET. True, sustained digital transformation cannot happen without a Mindset for Success. Without it, you’re executing a simple technology plan, a lift and shift transition from one system to another. Meaningful transformation requires more, and it’s the first ingredient in our four-part Equation for Digital Success. Digital Transformation requires a MINDSET for Success.

MINDSET is the WHY, not the How (that’s your technology). Mindset asks the following:
- What do we want to be great at v. what is it OK to be just OK at?
- What is our vision? What are the changes required to truly adapt our organization to our desired future state?
- Where do we instill discipline throughout this transformation initiative to stay focused on our guiding principles?
Your leadership team often creates the guiding principles, then takes the nearest exit. The same leaders who birth your transformation initiative need to see it through. And not just through a technology GO LIVE. This is an exciting milestone, but only a milestone on the greater journey. Really, it’s your call to GO BEGIN. The real work starts when a piece of technology goes into production; this is the time to see through the change you designed it to fuel.
Don’t lose your focus – or, worse yet, focus on the technology alone. Technology fuels how you operate; it does not change how you operate. Start with a common vision, a shared mindset for success that bleeds from the top of your organization down, one that asks WHY (digital) versus HOW (technology when it comes to workforce experience. That’s your TRUE NORTH. Point everything there: technology planning and selection, implementation strategy, change enablement and adoption strategy, reporting business outcomes, continuous improvement. FIND TRUE NORTH; use it as your guiding principle. That’s when transformation takes hold.
